Sedation Dentistry

In-house sedation with the training and safety protocols to make complex visits calm.

What is Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry uses medically supervised relaxation to make dental treatment comfortable for patients who would otherwise avoid it, postpone it, or struggle to get through it. At Toothology in Richmond, sedation is provided in-house by our team, certified in anesthesia and trained in dedicated sedation protocols developed through residency training at VCU and the McGuire VA Medical Center.

Results That Speak for Themselves

Why Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off care, sometimes for years, until a small problem becomes a serious one. Sedation interrupts that cycle. It lets patients with anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, complex medical histories, or simply long treatment plans receive the care they need in a calm, controlled way. With sedation led in-house by our team, Toothology can handle anxious patients, complex cases, and lengthy treatment in one place without needing to refer out. That continuity, coordinated across our team, is one of the reasons patients choose this practice.

Sedation Options

Nitrous Oxide

Inhaled “laughing gas” that produces a light, calm feeling within minutes and wears off completely before you leave the office. Safe, well-studied, and ideal for mild anxiety or routine procedures.

Oral Sedation

A prescription medication taken before your appointment that produces a deeper sense of relaxation. You stay conscious and responsive, but most patients remember little of the visit afterward.

IV Sedation

For complex procedures or patients with significant anxiety, IV sedation delivers medication directly through the bloodstream for precise, predictable, and rapidly adjustable effect, administered and monitored in-house by our certified, anesthesia-trained team.

Safety & Monitoring

Every sedation case at Toothology is planned in advance, medically reviewed, and continuously monitored throughout treatment. Our team’s formal anesthesia training is the foundation of the safety protocols here.
